Two Roads Brewing Company Choose Miura LX Boilers
Energy Efficiency, Low Emissions, and a Small Footprint all Cited as Factors for Choosing Miura
ATLANTA, January 15, 2014 – Named after the Robert Frost poem The Road Not Taken, Two Roads Brewing Company is the maker of an array of year-round and seasonal beers, including Road 2 Ruin, Workers Comp Saison, Igor’s Dream, and No Limits Hefeweizen. Although dedicated to taking the “road less traveled” in choosing the names and novel flavors for its popular brands, this new company has joined a growing list of craft brewers that have chosen boilers made by Miura, the world leader in ultra-low NOx modular on-demand steam solutions. Located in the historic U.S. Baird Building in Stratford CT, Two Roads Brewing Company is equipped with two gas-fired Miura LX-100 steam boilers.
“We had heard enough positive reviews about Miura from other brewers, especially those who were putting in new installations,” said Brewmaster Phil Markowski. “Good word-of-mouth reviews from other brewers is what interested us in Miura.”
Miura boilers have a unique “once-through” fin-tube design that heats a smaller volume of water more efficiently than other boilers. This, combined with built-in precision microprocessor-control technology, requires less fuel and saves an average of 20 percent annually on energy costs. Miura’s fin-tube design also enables its boilers to generate full steam from a cold start in five minutes or less. This on-demand steam generation makes Miura boilers able to efficiently manage changing load conditions, as opposed to consuming energy while idling in stand-by mode.
“We like the fact that our Miura boilers are very energy-efficient and quick to respond when you have to get them up to pressure,” Markowski noted. “We use predominantly low-pressure steam – 15 psi – and we don’t have to continuously keep a large volume of water hot, or wait for the boilers to produce adequate steam pressure before we can start.”
Two Roads uses its Miura on-demand steam for heating hot water for the brewing and cleaning process, as well as for boiling and mashing. The steam is also used for heating detergents for the kegging machine and for filtering steam to sterilize the inside of the beer kegs.
Another major benefit of the energy-conserving fin-tube design and precision control of Miura boilers is their reduced output levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx), a major contributor to air pollution, and carbon dioxide (CO2), the most prevalent of greenhouse gases. Miura boilers achieve low-NOx performance by reducing the temperature of the boiler’s flame, which in turn reduces the amount of excited nitrogen atoms available to bond with oxygen to form nitrogen oxides. As a result, NOx emissions are reduced to around one-quarter of what traditional fire-tube boilers emit. This enables Miura boilers to comply with even the most stringent air-quality regulations. With regard to reduced CO2 emissions, Miura’s technology leverages superior operating efficiency to contribute significant carbon abatement with a payback.
“Having low-NOx emissions is very important to us,” Markowski explained. “That was another important consideration in choosing Miura boilers. Also a main attraction is the compact size of these boilers. The space where we have our two LX-100s installed would never have accommodated a traditional fire tube boiler of similar horsepower.”
In addition to a compact footprint, low emissions, high energy efficiency, and on-demand steam, every Miura boiler also features the BL Micro Controller, precision microprocessor-control technology that keeps track of multiple individual monitoring points. An advanced diagnostic system, it can identify any potential challenge to smooth operation and recommend a solution on an easy-to-read display. A “sliding-window feature” records events four seconds before they occur for fast and effective trouble-shooting. This system can also be accessed via the Internet using the Miura Online Maintenance (“MOM”) feature for remote monitoring and diagnostics. Miura owners are able to obtain regular performance data for extremely accurate tracking of all boiler performance parameters.
The system can also interface with Miura’s Colormetry feature, which monitors water quality to prevent the build-up of scale inside the boiler. Another option is Miura’s Economizer package, an energy-saving component that works as a heat exchanger to capture and re-use heat from the boilers’ hot stack gas.
Users can also opt for Miura’s BOILERMATE® water-treatment chemicals, the main ingredient of which is silicate, an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor.“We are using Miura’s BOILERMATE water-treatment chemicals,” Markowski noted. “We are using a softener, prior to going in the water tank. We are pleased with BOILERMATE and so far we are still on our first drum, six months into the operation. Miura’s personnel are always very responsive; they were just here to check the water chemistry.”
